Sunday, March 11th, we will be hosting our final Holistic Health Now seminar through The Institute of Holistic Health Careers. These very popular workshops have included topics such as Using Herbs to Improve Your Quality of Health and Reflexology, Stress Management, and Supplements.

The final seminar, led by Mary Jo Ruggieri, Director of The Institute of Holistic Health Careers 'Education Wellness Professionals', is titled Polarity Therapy and Ayurvedic Medicine, and is promising to be just as interesting and well attended as the others have been.

Polarity Therapy is the practice of using energetic touch, reflex, and acupressure points to balance energy flow in the body. Polarity involves energetic exercise, bodywork, polarity yoga stretches, and food awareness, and is often used to reduce stress, increase energy, decrease anxiety, support better sleep, and much more.

Ayurvedic Medicine is an ancient practice of using herbs, massage, Yoga, and other methods to prevent disease and give one peace of mind. It is based on the belief that every human has three universal qualities: satva, rajas, and tamas. Developing a balance or equilibrium among these three qualities leads to health and well-being.

EASTER EGG HUNT IN THE HOCKING HILLS

There is never a lacking for things to do in the Hocking Hills - especially if you are looking for activities for the whole family!

If you have been searching for something fun to do over Easter weekend, Lake Hope State Park is hosting their 7th Annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 3rd. Taking place at their Nature Center at 1:00pm, kids are welcome to search for prize-filled eggs, and families can participate in 'egg'-citing games.

Hocking Valley Scenic Railway is also offering their Easter Bunny Train and Egg Hunt at 10:00am and 1:00pm on April 3rd. After an exciting ride on the train, all riders partake in an Easter egg hunt, searching for lots of prizes and candy. Certainly another fun family event!

At the Inn we have cabins that can sleep four to six people, so bring the family and plan to spend your long Easter weekend in the Hocking Hills! There is so much to do!

'SHOOT THE HILLS'

The Hocking Hills is one of the most beautiful places in Ohio and is a popular background for amateur and professional photographers alike. If you re looking for an opportunity to show off your ability to photograph all that the Hills has to offer, we have just the event for you.

The 9th Annual Nature Photography Competition 'Shoot the Hills' is coming up and is one of the largest photography competitions in the region.

Hosted by Hocking Hills State Park, the competition takes place April 16-18 and includes prizes and ribbons for a total of 53 winners. There are two divisions and the contest is open to all ages. The highlight of the competition weekend is a 24-hour digital photo contest in the counties of Hocking, Athens, Fairfield, and Vinton. If you are not a photographer, you can still join the fun. The weekend will also include vendors, photography programs, special speakers, nature hikes, and more!

So pack up those cameras and meet us in the Hocking Hills this April! The view is breathtaking.

NEW SPA TREATMENTS AT THE INN

We are very excited to add Thai Yoga Massage to our list of spa treatments offered at the Inn!

As we've recently posted, Thai Yoga Massage is an ancient art which uses a series of yoga postures, as well as palming and thumbing along the body's energy lines and pressure points, to heal the mind, body, and spirit. Together, these treatments relieve muscular tension, improve circulation, boost the immune system, and balance the body energetically. Performed on a mat on the floor, both client and practicioner are fully dressed in comfortable clothes to allow ease of movement and flexibility.

I just had my first treatment and loved it! It is just as relaxing as a therapeutic massage, but with the added element of stretches and releases.

As we've mentioned over the last month, we've had some interesting, informative, and entertaining events at the Inn lately.

The first week of March we hosted a Thai Yoga Massage class led by Anthony Conard from OM Yoga Studio. Students spent five days at the Inn, learning proper body alignment and stances, how to apply energy balance through acupressure and Thai energy sen lines, perfect safety precautions, as well as the history and philosophy of Thai Yoga Massage.

In March we were also very excited to have Via Vecchia Winery join us for one of our very popular wine tastinn events. Guests were treated to some of Via Vecchia's excellent wine, while enjoying good company and of course Chef Anthony's fabulous food. A truly wonderful time was had by all.

REFLEXOLOGY, STRESS MANAGEMENT, AND SUPPLEMENTS

It's almost time for the third session in our Holistic Healthcare Now series. On March 21st, Mary Jo Ruggieri, director of the Institute of Holistic Health Careers 'Education Wellness Professionals' will teach Reflexology, Stress Management, and Supplements.

Reflexology is a system of applying pressure to certain points on the hands and feet to reduce such things back pain, migraines, infertility and much more. Supplements that you might discuss include glucosamine for joint pain relief or intestinal cleanser and colloidal silver for any number of other ailments.

SPRING IS IN THE AIR IN THE HOCKING HILLS

We are starting to see the first signs of spring in the hills, but this would not be complete without the 'harbinger of spring', the American Woodcock.

For all enthusiasts who don't want to miss its beautiful and unique show, just down the road from the Inn, at the Hocking Hills State Park, bird watchers will be given the unique opportunity to observe the elaborate courtship rituals of the American Woodcock. On Friday, March 19th,at 7:30pm, meet a naturalist on the Expedition Trail just behind the Naturalists Office. Bring your binoculars and experience the zigzagging, banking, musical flight of this bird.

Have delicious dinner in the restaurant before you head down to the park, and return for a cozy evening in one of our cottages or cabins. Spring is indeed in the air!

DRIVE AND DISCOVER THE HOCKING HILLS

The third Saturday of every month is the perfect time to take a scenic and relaxing drive through the Hocking Hills. While perusing Old Man's Cave and Cedar Falls, and of course Ash Cave, make a stop at some of the area's finest shops.

Each third Saturday, five shops in the hills will offer a special discount to those taking a drive for the day. MAPLE SYRUP IN THE HOCKING HILLS

There are few things more delicious than the taste of pure maple syrup on a stack of buttermilk pancakes, especially on these cold winter mornings. At the Inn we are proud to serve 100% pure Ohio maple syrup and it certainly helps to make our breakfasts popular affairs!

March is the perfect time to make maple syrup and on March 13-14 Hocking Hills State Park is offering just the opportunity to experience it yourself. At Maple Sugaring in the Hills, naturalists will demonstrate historic methods used to make maple syrup and candy, including how sap is boiled down and what it tastes like fresh from the tree. A pancake breakfast will even be available at the park lodge, of course accompanied by local maple syrup!

The event takes place from 12-4 each day at the naturalists cabin behind the Old Man's Cave visitors center and you can contact the park office for more information. Just one more reason to make a trip to the Hocking Hills this spring!

FINAL FRIDAYS IN NELSONVILLE

Nelsonville is the place to be on the final Friday of every month!

The home of dozens of studio galleries, antique stores, and gift shops, Nelsonville's Historic Square Arts District has become a center for arts in Southeast Ohio. On the final Friday of each month, the square becomes an even hotter arts spot, with galleries and retail shops staying open late and featuring special art events.

From 6pm - 10pm, visitors can enjoy art chats, watch artists at work, watch drum circles, street musicians, dancers, and other entertainment. You can also check out new art exhibits around the square, as well as plays and musical shows at Stuart's Opera House.

So make a trip down to the Hocking Hills this weekend. Spend Friday night in Nelsonville and Saturday hiking around the beautiful Hocking Hills. Don't forget to stop by the Inn for lunch or dinner. Happy final Friday of February!

FULL MOON TOUR OF ASH CAVE

In the beautiful Hocking Hills lies the largest and most spectacular recess cave in Ohio. Measuring 700 feet from end to end and handicap accessible, it is a favorite spot for visitors of all ages. The massive cascading waterfall in the center of the cave is stunning and the approach through massive hemlocks, beech trees, and other hardwoods is truly breathtaking. Hocking Hills State Park is offering a unique opportunity to experience the beauty and serenity of this cave.

On Friday, February 26th, hikers can explore the many mysteries of Ash Cave by the light of the full moon. Participants may join a park naturalist in the parking lot area who will lead the way along the half-mile path, experiencing the uniqueness of Ash Cave first hand.

CHEF ANTHONY AT THE COLUMBUS HOME & GARDEN SHOW

Our very own Chef Anthony will be staring at the Columbus Home & Garden Show and it is sure to be a show you won't want to miss! Presenting on the Home Idea Center Stage at noon on Sunday, February 28, 'Cooking with Chef Anthony Schulz' will lead off the day's activities that will include an Amateur Cake Decorating Contest.

Art in Bloom is the theme of this year's event and the 14 gardens showcased are sure to feature dazzling living landscapes, stunning sculptures, paintings, and more. The Show features more than 400 exhibits and attractions and attendees can talk one-on-one with experts and shop for almost every imaginable tool, accessory, or service for any home or landscaping project.

The Home and Garden Show takes place at the Ohio Expo Center and runs February 27 - March 7. But February 28th is the day to be there!

THAI YOGA MASSAGE AT THE INN & SPA AT CEDAR FALLS

In a little over a week we will begin our five day Thai Yoga Massage course with instructor Anthony R. Conard from OM Yoga Studio. This intensive program, running February 28 through March 5, will give you an introduction to this ancient healing practice and is the first of two steps toward certification.

Thai Yoga Massage is a sacred healing art from Thailand and is performed with 'metta' or loving kindness. Called Nuat Phan Boran in Thai, it is considered one of the oldest medical systems in the world. The Massage consists of a system of assisted yoga postures, performed fully clothed, on the floor, with 'palming' and 'thumbing' along sen lines or energy meridians. It combines safe stances, rocking, and touch tecniques that unfold in a beautiful dance. Traditionally, Thai Yoga Massage was considered to be a spiritual as well as medical treatment and is intended to promote wellness in mind, body, and spirit.

Participants of this course will learn how to maintain proper body alignment and stances, apply energy balance through acupressure and Thai energy sen lines, perfect safety precautions to prevent injury and avoid contraindications, and discuss the history and philosophy of Thai Yoga Massage, as well as much more.

We are very pleased to have Anthony Conard at the Inn. He has been practicing yoga for 23 years, has studied with Master Kam Thye Chow, is a certified teacher of Lotus Palm Thai Yoga Massage, and is a Kripalu Yoga Instructor, having been initiated by Kripalu's founder, Yogi Amrit Desai. His relaxed and inviting teaching style makes him an effective teacher and gives students access to both beginning as well as deeper practices of yoga.

Via Vecchia is known for using natural and simple winemaking that draws upon traditional methods that trace back to a small village named Grondola in Tuscany, Italy. LUMINESCENT ORCHESTRII AT STUART'S OPERA HOUSE

On February 19 Luminescent Orchestrii will put on an incredible musical event featuring Romanian gypsy melodies, punk frenzy, salty tango, hard-rocking klezmer, haunting Balkan harmony, hip-hop beats and Appalachian fiddle. Hailing from different scenes in New York City, the members come together through their love of Balkan and Gypsy music. COOKING AT HILLS MARKET

Chef Anthony and Innkeeper Ellen were invited to The Hills Market to open their winter cooking class series. The Hills Market is a wonderful community grocery store with exceptional gourmet shopping. The Market specializes in carrying hard-to-find items, internationally-loved foods, and locally-produced products.

Clearly we were excited to be a part of their cooking class program. Chef Anthony was invited to lead two classes in January, as his first class sold out so enthusiastically.

The first hour of the class, participants filed into the tiny but quaint cooking area where Chef Anthony dazzled them with how to cook a three-course meal. Menu items included Goat Cheese & Sherry with Warm Goat Cheese on Ciabatta Points with Fine Herbs & Sherry Vinaigrette, Brown Butter Sage Chicken Breast with Crimini Mushrooms, Asparagus & Sweet Potato Gnocchi, and Bourbon Spiked Pear & Apple Bread Pudding.

For the second hour, the group was wined and dined as they feasted on the items they watched being made and enjoyed wines selected by Wine Director Constance Begue. A fun time was had by all!

MANAGEMENT TEAM COOKS TOGETHER

Innkeepers Ellen and Terry recently took the Inn's management team to Woodhaven Farm in Johnston, Ohio. The Farm is 10 acres of beauty and includes two ponds, an organic garden, a greenhouse, and a barn that holds a state of the art kitchen. It was this kitchen that brought us to the farm and provided us with the unique opportunity to spend quality time together as a team.

Woodhaven Farm owner, Tami Cecil, utilizes her kitchen for Corporate Team Building, using the process of food preparation to create an atmosphere that promotes comfortable interaction among the team members and an emphasis on having fun. We definitely found that to be true.

Tami greeted us upon arrival and explained the dishes that we would be making. We divided into two teams and spent the next two hours preparing a variety of recipes, including Jarlsburg and red onion spread with pita chips, red wine balsamic vinaigrette with salad greens, pork tenderloin with rosemary cream sauce, roasted garlic smashed potatoes, caramelized green beans, and a delectable chocolate dessert.

The best part was at the end, when we were able to sit down, eat what we had made, and visit with each other in a warm and stress free environment. Taking our staff away was a perfect opportunity to mingle, have fun, and get to know each other better. Tami Cecil's program at Woodhaven Farm was just the thing for us...corporate team building through cooking.

WONDERS OF OLD MAN'S CAVE AND THE HOCKING HILLS

This Friday, January 22nd, at 2pm, Hocking Hills State Park is hosting Wonders of Old Man's Cave. Participants will be led by Park Naturalists on a short hike, discovering some of the facts about the history of the area and the rock formations that are found throughout the park.

Old Man's Cave is one of Ohio's most popular natural attractions and the most visited one in the Hocking Hills. The gorge enveloping the cave is a natural formation and runs about a half mile, reaching depths of roughly 150 feet at the deepest point. Old Man's Cave itself is named for an early settler, Richard Rowe, who took to living in the cave after the Civil War.

Wonders of Old Man's Cave is a free event and you can contact Hocking Hills State Park for more information.

Sessions will be led by Mary Jo Ruggieri, PhD, Director of the Institute of Holistic Health Careers' 'Education Wellness Professionals', and will include topics such as Using Herbs to Improve Your Quality of Health, and Reflexology, Stress Management, and Supplements.

Participants can look forward to mini sessions in Polarity, Acupressure, Reflexology, and Stretching to Relieve Pain. There will also be a drawing after each seminar for a free gift certificate for Holistic Health Classes and products.

STUART'S OPERA HOUSE

Originally built in the late 1800's and reopened in 1997, Stuart's is located in Nelsonville's Historic Square Arts District and is an institution in southeastern Ohio. A lovingly restored theater, it provides a long list of cultural events and is the premier place for live music in the area.

The Opera House is currently preparing for its first ever Ohio Winter Folk Festival on January 16. A full slate of great bands will perform and a music swap meet and DIY craft fair will take place in the lobby.

It is amazing that the New Year is almost upon us. It feels as though just yesterday we were celebrating Thanksgiving with Chef Anthony's fabulous dinner at the Inn, and already we are a week from Christmas and only two weeks from New Year's Eve.

January is often the month when winter really settles in and people begin to feel the blahs. Well this is not the case in the Hocking Hills. Because the holidays have come and gone is no excuse for not getting out into nature and exploring all that there is to see and experience. Here are a few suggestions.

On January 10th, our own spa manager and massage therapist, Randy Wellman, will lead a Fireside Chat titled Stressbuster Techniques for Beating the Winter Blahs. You won't want to miss this event, taking place around the fireplace of our new Gathering Place.

The very popular 45th Annual Winter Hike is also a definite don't-miss. The 6-mile trek starts and ends at Old Man's Cave and spans The Grandma Gatewood Trail section of the North Country Scenic and America's Discovery Trails. The views are breathtaking, the wildlife is abundant, and the experience is incredible. Make plans to stay the weekend and enjoy the naturalists' programs, games, and refreshments in the Dining Lodge of Hocking Hills State Park on Friday evening.

If you are looking for a more relaxing and informative experience, join us for our Holistic Health Now series. Every year we honor our employees for their hard work and great care for our guests by hosting a holiday party for our staff and their families. This year was no exception and was one of our most fun!

Chef Anthony treated everyone to honey baked ham and vegetarian lasagna, while the rest of our team treated us to some of their homemade favorites. It was certainly a feast to enjoy!

There was a gift exchange, corn hole and Wii games, while the euchre tournament was especially fun - and competitive!

The evening ended with full bellies, much camaraderie, and visions of sugar plums dancing in our heads.

WREATH MAKING AND COOKIE BAKING AT THE INN & SPA AT CEDAR FALLS

It has been a busy week at the Inn! On Tuesday, Inn gardeners and nature enthusiasts Bobbi Gill and Kellie Hutchinson led a Holiday Wreath Making Class. Participants made natural 20-24" wreaths out of fresh cut evergreens and dried botanicals.
All were encouraged to be creative and have fun and, as you can see, they did that! Look for this class again on December 1, 2010!

The fun was not over at the Inn. Thursday was the first of 3 of our popular Cookie Baking Classes and a wonderful time was had by all. Participants got a hands-on opportunity to make 5 different types of cookies and the class also included recipes, lunch, and a box of cookies to take home. INNKEEPERS ON THE ROAD

Terry and I visited Michigan Select Registry Inns last week. Our journey began in the lovely town of Marshall, where we stayed at the National House Inn. I took Terry to see our Select Registry headquarters office and to meet the wondeful team who 'run the show'. We had a great dinner with fellow Innkeeper Barb Bradley and her husband Darryl. Our Executive Directors from THINK, Norm and Kathryn Kinney, joined us as well.

The next morning we ventured to Kalamazoo where we stopped and toured the Henderson Castle. It was a pleasure to meet Peter and Laura, the Innkeepers. From there, Terry wanted to show me the delightful waterside town of Saugatuck. Wow! If you've never been, it is a must see! And a definite shopper's paradise of quaint and unique stores.

A short trip took us to Castle in the Country, where we spent the night. Herb and Ruth Bovan made us feel right at home and we enjoyed dinner with them and the new owner of the Inn At Honey Run and his guest services manager. The breakfast Herb made was scrumptions and he was even gracious enough to accomodate the early hour at which we needed to eat so we could set off for Sutton's Bay.

The Inn at Blackstar Farms was our next stop and was truly an exciting part of our trip. Innkeeper Don gave us a personal tour not only of the Inn, but of the vineyard, winery, gardens, creamery, and bakery. What a fabulous property. And the wine tasting was devine. We are excited to meet with Don and his wife in a couple of weeks at our Inn to discuss their creating private label wines for us.

Leaving Blackstar Farms was sweet sorrow but we headed to our final destination at Stafford's Bay View Inn - what prompted our whole trip. Stafford Smith, his family, and his innkeeping team showed us a fabulous time. Our meeting with them was wonderful and full of good information to take back to our Inn.

We rushed back home and have already begun to implement some of the ideas we discussed. That makes a win/win for our staff and guests!

Visiting Inns is great fun - whether you are 'inn' the business like us or as a guest!

PUMPKIN CARVING IN THE HOCKING HILLS

On Saturday we had our first of two pumpkin carving contests at the Inn. Our guests were very creative and it was great fun. Nine pumpkins were carved and were lit along the front porch for all to see.

If you missed the fun, you have another opportunity to join in this Saturday, October 31. You can sign up on Friday and carving begins following breakfast on Saturday at 10:30am. HOCKING HILLS FALL SPECTACLE PRESS TRIP

The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls hosted the Hocking Hills Spectacle Press Trip on October 22 & 23. Travel writers from Georgia, Ohio, New York, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Massachusetts came to stay with us. Several of the writers arrived early to enjoy spa treatments and, as Innkeepers, Terry and I hosted an appetizer and drink affair prior to dinner. Chef Anthony and his team wined and dined the writers on their first evening in the area.

The next morning, after one of the Inn's hearty breakfasts, the writers hiked Old Man's Cave, and then proceeded off to a variety of activities. Chef Anthony once again wowed whose who attended his hands-on cooking class, teaching them to make his famous chocolate torte and an apple-onion chutney. After breakfast on Saturday, the esteemed writers left for more adventures in the Hocking Hills, before leaving the area on Sunday.

It is always a pleasure to host writers. We were fortunate to have them stay and write about us and the Hocking Hills and we hope that they will return in the near future.

CAMBRIDGE TEA HOUSE

I had a delightful lunch recently at the Cambridge Tea House in Marble Cliff, Ohio. I was joined by my friends Di and Tricia, who has been helping her mother to open the tea house. We were treated to Afternoon High Tea, which was delicious and included warm scones with cream and jam, savory finger sandwiches, and assorted sweets.
From the yummy soup, to the quaint sandwiches, to the delectable scones (some of the best I've ever had), to the finishing touches of the assorted desserts, it was an enjoyable time. They also offer Prince and Princess Tea, which is a fun experience for those 10 and under, as well as an assortment of Soups, Sandwiches and Salads.

ANNUAL NEW SMYRNA BEACH JAZZ FESTIVAL

While staying at our beautiful condo in New Smyrna Beach this September, we had the pleasure of attending the New Smyrna Beach JAZZ Festival! This four day event is truly a celebration of JAZZ. Thursday and Friday evenings included the Kick Off Party and Silent Auction at Clancy's Cantina and music a the Coronado Civic Center and PJ's Sea Shack. Saturday featured a full day of Trios, Quartets, Orchestras and Bands. It is great fun to skip from bar to lounge to restaurant, listening to all things jazz. Sunday wrapped up with Stetson University Big Band, among others.

All of New Smyrna Beach's streets are located along the ocean shore, which makes for a beautiful visit to the downtown. Featured in the picture with us is festival producer Marc Monteson and his sister Patti. It was a wonderful vacation and a fabulous festival!

THINGS ARE HAPPENING AT THE INN AND SPA AT CEDAR FALLS

Welcome to October, one of the most beautiful months of the year in the Hocking Hills - as you can see from the gorgeous pictures courtesy of Jim Crotty! October is also the beginning of some busy months at the Inn.

Soon we will be welcoming back poet-psychologist Stephen Emerick and his daughter Shawna Emerick. They will be leading a retreat on The Nature of Life: Inner Voice - Inner Light. Sessions will be focused on the participant and will begin with mild Yoga and meditation techniques, followed by an opportunity to write and share your own expression of poetry in a supportive environment. This is a very popular retreat and we are excited to welcome Dr. Emerick back to the Inn.

We are also excited about our Fall CookInn Class with Chef Anthony. Another very popular event, guests will take part in making the dinner meal, while learning new techniques, meeting new friends, and having an all around fun time. This is a hands-on class and is great for spouses, mothers and daughters, or even a group of friends.

In December the Inn will be offering a Holiday Wreath Making Class, with our Inn gardeners and nature enthusiasts, Bobbi Gill and Kellie Hutchison. Participants will make natural 20-24" wreaths out of fresh cut evergreens and dried botanicals, and are welcome to bring any special accents to personalize their creation. This is a fun afternoon activity to enjoy with your family and friends.

We also have our popular cookie classes coming up so look for more information about that soon!

WHERE DID SUMMER GO?

Dear Friends,
While working in the office this morning, we got many questions about the current weather in the Hocking Hills. Most people were wondering if they should pack umbrellas for their hikes or if they should carry a sweatshirt in case it remained chilly the rest of the day. As weather forecasting goes, I am not an expert so I got on the trusty internet to look at weather.com and was shocked by the 10 day forecast and as I reflected on the summer weather in general, it seems that we are in the midst of a strange year for weather.

July in the midwest was the coolest ever on record. This summer has been among the driest in recent history also. Many of our lawns have long since turned brown and crunchy. The leaves have already started their seasonal color change and the local waterfalls have long been dried up.

Now as I look at the 10 day forecast it looks as if this coming week is going to feel more like November than the first week of October. The high temperature this coming week is 70 and that will not happen next Sunday. This week one day, the high is going to be 56 degrees! Our overnight temperatures are going to be as low as 34 degrees a few mornings. I suppose we need to start thinking about bringing in our house plants and covering anything we don't want to freeze.

Don't get me wrong, I do love the fall weather. There is nothing better than putting on a pair of jeans, an old sweatshirt and my hiking boots and hitting a trail without having to worry about carrying a gallon of water and sweating out 2 gallons. I am just not sure if I am ready for frost on the ground yet.

I do know that if the weather gets too cold this week you will find me having a bowl of homemade soup for lunch in the restaurant or curled up on the couch in the fireside room with a book and a cup of tea. I would love to see you there!

FALL HAS ARRIVED IN THE HOCKING HILLS

Dear Friends,
We welcomed the first days of Fall in the Hocking Hills this week and, as I've written before, it is a sight to see! On my way to the Inn today, I took a few moments to admire the countryside and appreciate how fortunate I am to be able to experience the beauty of this area every day. The rolling hills and lush countryside give you a feeling of peace and tranquility, timelessness and calm, like few other places can. The leaves are just beginning to turn, their bright, spectacular hues just starting to show themselves. You feel as if you are standing on a the edge of a precipice; that at any moment the trees will explode with a flurry of color. It is certainly the most beautiful time of the year in the Hocking Hills, and an experience few should miss.
If you are looking for activities in the area, there are paths to hike, with or without a guide, train rides, plane rides and even a lake to fish. Or you can sit quietly on the porch of one of our cabins or cottages and enjoy the beautiful colors and wildlife - one of my favorite things to do! Don't forget to stop in to our restaurant for lunch or dinner. A casual but delicious 4 course meal is a wonderful way to end a busy day in the Hills.

SQUIRRELS, GROUNDHOGS, DEER, OH MY!

Dear Friends,

As I was driving to work today, I began to wonder why the local wildlife seems to spend so much time on and around the roads. I had not even made it out of the driveway when a squirrel darted out of the neighbor's yard and across our street and right in the path of my car! Luckily for the little fellow, I was not yet at cruising speed and could stop for him. One squirrel has been saved by my newly installed brakes! I started down the road and to my surprise I encountered at least 5-6 more squirrels darting about, either crossing the road or having a leisurely lunch on the warm pavement. It was not only squirrels that seemed attracted to the roadsides today. I also saw at least 2 groundhogs and even a deer munching on something next to the road.

As I drove, I pondered why so many animals would hang around such a dangerous place as the road. Don't they see their fallen comrades laying silently nearby? Then it dawned on me, we were providing them an amazing service. What might be the hardest thing for a squirrel to do? Why, it must be to crack open a nut! What happens when we drive our cars over these very nuts? We crack them open! How wonderful it must be for a squirrel, groundhog or a deer to have lunch and have to work so little for it. In their minds, they must thank us. Right after they catch their breath and their heartbeat returns to normal.

Mountain Biking Arrives!

Among the news was the announcement that in the very near future, we will have a new avenue to explore the beauty of our state parks. Two new mountain biking trails have been built off of state route 374. They will feature a moderate as well as a challenging course. We are excited to announce the arrival of Thai Yoga Massage to the Hocking Hills. March 1st through March 5th, 2010, Anthony Conard M.A. (Dharmadas) will be teaching Thai Yoga Massage at The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls.

Anthony Conard is a former resident of Kripalu Center and is a certified teacher of Lotus Palm Thai Yoga Massage. He has studied with Master Kam Thye Chow extensively. He is a Kripalu Yoga instructor and has been practicing yoga for 23 years. He has been teaching yoga for 12 years and has been teaching Thai Yoga since 2008. Anthony has master's degree in Anthropology and his relaxed and inviting teaching style reflects his cross-cultural interests. This gives his students access to both beginning as well as the deepter practices of yoga.

Thai Yoga Massage is a transformative form of meditation in action. This massage style combines safe stances, rocking and touching techniques that unfold in a beautiful dance. Anyone in normal health can learn Thai Yoga Massage.

This Level One Class will span 5 days. You will learn fundamentals of flowing transitions and postures, and how to maintain proper body alignment and stances that create a mutually beneficial massage for the practitioner and recipient. You will also discuss the history and philosophy of Thai Yoga Massage. You will apple energy balance through acupressure and Thai energy sen lines and will learn to integrate metta (loving kindness) and meditation into your bodywork.

Twice a year a group of our closest innkeeper friends convene at one of our inns. This week they all came here to the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls. It is a time of sharing, camaraderie, education and just plain fun. Our friends from THINK (Time Honored Inns Nationally Known) began arriving Monday afternoon just in time for Chef Anthony’s appetizers and spirits. We ate a delectable dinner outside on the patio and came indoors to The Gathering Place for desserts and sharing of “what’s new at your inn”. After a little work, more drinks and chit chat was enjoyed by all. Following a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast, we worked all day. Willie Brown, a speaker from Acorn Internet Services, provided us with lots of information on social marketing. Mark File our webmaster always provides an update on our site, http://thinkaboutinns.com/. Terry Lingo, owner and contractor of the new meeting/event space, conducted a tour and discussed everything we did to make the building GREEN. The rest of the day was spent discussing and solving business matters with each of our inns. Inns included in our illustrious group are Inn at Honeyrun, Murphin Ridge Inn, National House, Beaumont Inn and Inn at Gristmill Square. We are blessed to have Norm and Kathryn Kinney, retired Executive Director of Select Registry, speared head our efforts. Following another great meal, we continued to solve inn problems of the world, drink more wine and went to bed. It’s always sad to say good bye to our friends, but we know they are there for us on the phone or in emails whenever we need them. And, we will see them in the spring when we get together at another THINK property.

WHEN ARE THE LEAVES GOING TO CHANGE?

Dear friends,
Friday night I found myself watching football and a band performance at the first annual Jamboree Game at Logan High School. As the hours got later and the sun began to set over the field, I realized that I wished I had brought a sweatshirt. It was getting chilly. But wait! That can't be, it's still August!

It may still be August, but fall is just around the corner and this time of the year in the Hocking Hills is a sight to behold. The transformation from summer to fall will begin occurring soon. The days will get shorter and the nights will cool off. You will start to see the fawns that are getting big enough to venture out on their own lose their spots. The leaves will begin to change into their vivid fall colors and at least once a day I will get the question, "What are the peak dates to see the leaves?". I would love to be able to answer this question with certainty, but there is nothing certain about when and if the leaves will be at their brightest.

According to the US Forest Service, temperature and moisture are the two biggest factors in how bright the fall colors will be and when the leaves will fall. The more warm, sunny days with cool but not freezing nights we have, the brighter the colors will be when the change occurs. The bigger the spring and summer rainfalls an area has, the longer the leaves will stay green and on the trees. In other words, a warm, wet spring, favorable summer weather and warm sunny fall days with cool nights will produce the most brilliant colors.

One can usually estimate that for a few weeks in October, our leaves will be at their brightest. For those of us in the Hocking Hills this means that we will see a huge increase in traffic on the roads. Our park trails will be overflowing with people hiking and taking pictures, and our normally quiet corner of the state will be buzzing with activity.

The fall foliage will bring visitors, but there is definitely more to do than just hike. Many things are happening in our area in the coming months. There will be football games to attend, concerts in the park, dinner with the Innkeepers and wine tastings. There are hummingbirds to feed by hand. Frogs, toads and turtles are waiting to be discovered. There are late night canoe excursions and shops to explore.

If you have never experienced the beauty of the Hocking Hills in the fall, this is the time to plan your trip. Whether you only have a day to spend with us or you have a whole weekend to relax and unwind , you will leave the Hocking Hills at the end of your visit feeling refreshed and renewed. You will have seen some of the most breathtaking scenery in the midwest and you will have a new appreciation for the nature that surrounds us.

Housekeeping means more than just knowing how to make a bed or clean a whirlpool tub. At the Inn, prior to your arrival, your entire reservation is reviewed with our housekeeping staff. In addition to cleaning, special request, large or small, even while you are here, are taken care of by our housekeepers. Wine, picnic baskets, cheese/fruit plates, chocolates and flowers, as well as our homemade cookies are carefully placed in your room, cabin or cottage by them.

Our housekeeping staff is full of information and tidbits about the Hocking Hills area, nearby attractions and the state parks. They are happy to provide directions too. Just ask!

ATV in HOCKING HILLS

Terry and I, along with our children were invited by Hocking Hills Nature Trails to experience their new business…ATV riding. I must say in the beginning, I wasn’t too enthused as I’d never been, but I’m always game to try new things. Getting there from our inn was easy. The entrance to their property was gorgeous highlighted with a stunning iron gate, made by the owner. We were introduced to Doug, our trainer and guide. My daughter Sarah and I were novices and both somewhat apprehensive. However, Doug put us right at ease. He was wonderful teaching us about the use of our ATV. And, he made it fun for Benjamin, our son and Terry who were experienced riders. After our training, we practiced on the beginner and intermediate trail before we embarked on our ride. Again, Doug made us feel comfortable and guided us along the way. Then, ready to take off, we could either go on our own (which most people do), or have a guide. We spent the next hour or so on the wooded trails and in the fields enjoying the countryside on our ATV’s. We had a blast, and I will return and ride again. This is a great addition to the Hocking Hills and an added attraction for our guests.

You may never see the Inn’s bookkeeper. But there is great care taken to ensure that your stay is financially accurate and recorded correctly.

As you stroll through the expansive gift shop, some of it located in the original summer kitchen, it is evident that each item is carefully selected and displayed in “just the right place”. Located in the great state of Ohio, it was easy to feature many products from local artisans in the gift shop. Some include edible products like pasta sauce and jellies, and handmade pottery, photographs and soap.

Summer is here! What to do? What to do?

Dear friends,
The summer solstice has arrived, the sweltering heat is upon us and the hum of air conditioners can be heard in many neighborhoods. This means that the Hocking Hills and the surrounding areas are once again teeming with travelers from all corners of Ohio and its nearby states. If you've hiked all you can hike and are still looking for something to do in the area, there is no shortage of activities planned for the coming weeks.
Today kicks off the annual hand feeding of the Hummingbirds at Lake Hope State Park. Hold a small feeder in your hand and watch with delight as these beautiful Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds drink. You can feed the hummingbirds at Lake Hope Nature Center Wednesday through Sunday from 1:00pm to 3:00pm until August 30th. As many as 25 Hummingbirds have been seem at one time. Stop by and try your luck!
If you are interested in being so up close and personal with the wildlife, you could always Bird By Kayak with Touch the Earth Adventures. On Saturday July 27, Julie Davis, president of the Columbus Audubon will lead a birding adventure on the waterways of Southeast Ohio. Experience and identify by sight and sound such birds as osprey, heron and various woodpeckers. The cost is $40.00 and kayaks are provided. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 740-591-9094.
If romance is in your plans, a torchlight canoe trip may be in order. Experience the Hocking River lit by torch light. The sounds of the evening animal chatter become the soundtrack for torch flames reflecting on the rippling water and the wonder of the moon and stars above. A roaring campfire, refreshments and entertainment await your return from what will surely be a canoe trip you will never forget. The Hocking Valley Canoe Livery will be your guides fro this adventure. Make reservations now to as to not miss out on the fun.
For the adrenaline seekers, visit the Hocking Hills Canopy Tour. Take a 3 hour tree top adventure along the Hocking River, over a cave and a waterfall. Professional guides will wisk you along 10 ziplines and 5 sky bridges and will give you the most unique view of Hocking Hills.
If it is in the air conditioning that you want to be, then make reservations now for the next cooking class at The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls. Join Chef Anthony on July 22 as you learn to make quick finger foods that are easy and not time consuming. These are perfect for little get togethers with friends. Some examples are Prosciutto wrapped asparagus with Parmesan and Salsa Fresco with Pearl Mozzarella and Crostini. This mid week class is from 11:00am-2:00pm, includes lunch and the cost is $35 / person.
It just goes to show that, even when the hiking trails become crowded there is still much to do in Southeast Ohio. You don't have to look very hard to have an adventure!

I always wanted to try kayaking. And, to try it with Mimi and her company Touch the Earth Adventure. When my cousins and I were looking for something fun to do we decided to go on the Moonlight Tour, What a great time we all had. We met at Lake Logan with about 10 other people. Mimi instructed us how to paddle and kayak. After a short lesson, we carried our kayaks to the lake. Then, we spent two hours exploring Lake Logan and all it has to offer. Unfortunately, the moon decided not to show itself that evening. But, we still had lots of fun. It was a peaceful, relaxing evening. And, I wasn't even sore the next day. This will definitely be on my "to do" list again. Everyone should go kayaking at least once.

Repower America- Take Action

Dear Friends,

The last few weeks we have had more than our fair share of unseasonably warm days here in the Hocking Hills. During this supposed heat wave, it has been said more than once, "It's hot! When can we turn on the air conditioning?". I have been reluctant to do this for a few reasons and will stand my ground as long as I can bear it.

First and foremost, I love the smell of the fresh air that the spring brings. There is nothing better than being able to open all the windows in the house and let a breeze blow through, unless you suffer from a pollen allergy, that is. The old, stuffy winter air is replaced by the smell of flowers blooming, the spring rains and freshly cut grass. The fresh air seems to lift everyone's spirits.

Secondly, I dread the rising electric bill that results from the use of the central air. Our electric bill will normally double, and sometimes triple when the air is turned on. And even though I am expecting it, the "sticker shock" always gets me that first month. Each year I vow to "suffer through" the heat and not use the central air, but I always seem to give in in the heat of the moment.

This year I have a new and even more important reason for not wanting to turn it on. I have been reading about the energy crisis that is taking place in the world, and am convinced that everyone can make a difference.

Repower America has taken charge and is leading the fight for a more energy efficient world. Their idea that we should use fuels that are not expensive, don't cause pollution and are abundantly available right here at home may be the key to end our reliance on carbon-based fuels and ending the destruction of our planet.

These fuels are already available to us. According to the Repower America website, "Scientists have confirmed that enough solar energy falls on the surface of the earth every 40 minutes to meet 100 percent of the entire world's energy needs for a full year. Tapping just a small portion of this solar energy could provide all of the electricity America uses. And enough wind power blows through the Midwest corridor every day to also meet 100 percent of US electricity demand. Geothermal energy, similarly, is capable of providing enormous supplies of electricity for America."

We can begin the change, by making homes and businesses more energy efficient, increasing renewable energy generation and constructing a unified smart grid to carry electricity. We can begin transitioning to energy efficient plug-in cars to reduce our fuel usage.

The Bees are Buzzing in Hocking Hills!!

The April showers are hopefully over and the May flowers are blooming. Spring has sprung, the birds are chirping and the bees are buzzing... the Carpenter Bees that is. The nice weather seems to have brought out an influx of the ever annoying Carpenter Bees to the Hocking Hills area and to The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls.

These hairy, bee-like creatures are often mistaken for Bumblebees due to their similar structure and coloration. This species get their name from the fact that nearly all members build their nests in burrows in dead wood, bamboo, or structural timbers. Carpenter Bees prefer to build burrows in weathered, untreated lumber and their nests always have perfectly round openings. These creatures can cause damage to buildings when they build their burrows and often leave a mess in their wake.

Although the male Carpenter Bee is often aggressive and will defend his territory, he does not have a stinger. He can not sting you. The female Carpenter bee is mostly docile but will sting if directly provoked.

Green is the word, and if you want to get rid of Carpenter Bees without using insecticides you can try plugging the entrance holes with caulk. You can simply put caulk or putty in the holes and paint over them. The bees will not try to get out once they are trapped inside. Another method is to agitate the bees and then vacuum them out of the nest. This can only be accomplished if the nest is relatively new, and only in the early evening when the bees have returned to the nest and are relatively slow. A new colony will sometimes consist of only 20 or so bees, with one queen. If you notice that the colony is relatively small, you may want to consider waiting outside of the nest with a vacuum cleaner while poking the nest with a stick. If all else fails, good old fashioned bug spray will keep them at bay for awhile.

Once you rid yourself of the pesky bees, you will want to keep them from returning by keeping the dwelling painted or sided with vinyl.

Although sometimes bothersome, carpenter bees are not dangerous and generally do not cause any harm. More often they will just buzz about pollinating open faced flowers and will keep to themselves. With the flowers in bloom at the Inn, I have a feeling our Carpenter Bees have been hard at work this spring.

MEMORIAL DAY IS AROUND THE CORNER!

I can hardly believe it, but Memorial Day is right around the corner. It is next weekend to be exact. Many people will be staying at home, enjoying the weather, and grilling out with family and friends, but if adventure is more of what you are looking for this holiday week, we have just the things for you to do!

Start your weekend off with the Feast of the Flowering Moon in Chillicothe. This festival being held Friday, Saturday and Sunday features Native American music, dancing, traders, and exhibits with a mountain man encampment with working craftsmen and demonstrations. There are also over 80 crafters and commercial exhibits, food, fun, games and contests for the whole family.

Saturday and Sunday take in the sights at the Rockbridge Art and Garden Celebration. Don’t miss your chance to see world class gold jewelry artist Trudy Springer demonstrating fine gold jewelry making – Greg Springer will be demonstrating his amazing techniques in clay – Renee Gerring exhibiting the art of recycled bottle painting – Frank Marteney fabulous works with wire – Master Basket Weaver Leota Hutchison with incredible basket weaving and garden art. Master Gardener Nick Kozma from Home Grown Gardens will be displaying spectacular annual and perennial plantings and will be on hand to answer all of your gardening questions! Demonstrations will be going on all day - all art work and plants will be for sale. This is a free exhibit.

On Monday May 25th don't miss out on the Memorial Day Train ride in Nelsonville, Ohio at the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway. Celebrate the holiday with an old-fashioned train ride! The train will travel to Logan and does not include a stop at Robbins Crossing, which is only open on weekends. Adult: $13 Senior (60+): $11 Child (3-12): $10 Under 3 years old ride free but must sit on guardian's lap.

Final Fridays on the Square in Nelsonville will be celebrating Bloomin' on the Bricks on Friday May 27th. On the final Friday of every month, except December, galleries and retail shops on Nelsonville's historic square stay open late to feature special art events. From 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm, enjoy artists' demonstrations, art chats, artists at work in their studios and openings of new art exhibits, plays, and musical shows. Watch drum circles, street musicians, dancers, and other sidewalk entertainment amidst artists & craftspersons selling their wares. It's safe to plant now, so get your flowers, herbs and vegetable plants from local growers. Garden Art will delight all the fairies in your garden paradise.

Stop in at The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls Restaurant and pick up a brown bag lunch to take with you while you explore Hocking Hills and its wonders this holiday weekend. Everyone have a safe and happy Memorial Day Holiday.
